Devil’s Claw and Yucca are herbal nutraceuticals effective in reducing pain and swelling from arthritis, joint injury, muscle and other soft tissue soreness. They can be taken individually or in combination with other joint supplements such as MSM, Glucosamine, and Chondroitin. Devils Claw provides an additional benefit of increasing gastric secretions which can benefit horses with poor appetite and digestion. Devil’s claw (also known as “herbal bute” is an extract derived from a native African plant, and has been used to treat osteo and rheumatoid arthritis in humans, horses and dogs. It has powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, similar to NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) by inactivating the COX, Cyclooxygenase enzyme which is the pain relieving mechanism behind phenylbutazone, aspirin, and ibuprofen, firocoxib. Clinical studies have confirmed an increase in pain relief for 60% of patients with an osteoarthritic hip or knee.

The active component in Devil’s Claw is harpagophytum, which not only has pain relieving benefit, but is an appetite stimulant and will increase gastric secretions which could benefit horses with poor appetite and body condition, however not recommended for a horse being treated for gastric or hind gut ulcers or pregnant mares.

Yucca is another popular herbal anti-inflammatory which has been used for many years by Native Americans. The active ingredient in Yucca is the plant sterol, Saponin which not only reduces inflammation and pain but also is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants protect and maintain cell membranes from free radical reactions and oxidative stress that can result from everyday cell metabolism, injuries, joint disease and extreme work and exercise. Yucca also has antimicrobial and antifungal benefits improving colon health and, therefore improves digestion and absorption of nutrients from the GI tract.
